Although John never painted strictly from photos, he used them as inspiration to create his own version of reality. John was also an excellent photographer, but most people are not aware of this fact. Basically, he just took pictures of things and sights he liked, often resulting in paintings. He did not, however, take himself seriously in this field.
In his photos, you can see the same talent for frame, perspective, color, rhythm and balance he displayed in his paintings. Seeing one of his photos, you can almost see the painting that it became or what it could have been.
